"I fear for thee, rubicund weaver. He who ploughs across powdered
damslely orchid fields. He with yellowy moon, graze me ´neath fragrant myrrh.
´Hove an host, gashed rhyme wisp dazzle. Meadowly opaque, the trance
sway begotten and ghostish cloud Lord devour the swift gorse.
...and so I taketh Thee, ill twined clave. Spiralled tusk, spun out of hell.
Beneath Death´s yawning gap and its cradling murmur of the abyss,
a caleidoscopic lethargy of intoxication bewitch´d my temples.
A conical vulture, daubed in yealding foam. Thorough repelling and sweet maul.
Grime robed Demons tamed skies. Horned dogs with wondrous hoofs.
Lifeless, like the stars are dangle in the vast spacevault, these
monotonic sounds which with an drone, our wisdom pleading pours."

REVIEW : Dødhelighaz grafwlijka mund ok dess vaggande avgrundsbruus
PUBLICATION : A Dead Spot of Light... #9 (Germany | November 4, 2010 CE)
DOWNLOAD : A Dead Spot of Light... (Archive.org  | PDF)

TEXT : Limited ... this idea comes to the mind in a lot of respects while listening to this tape. Limited, because not many copies of it exists; limited, because the tracks follow a peculiar reduced song-writing concept; limited, because not many instruments and elements can be discovered throughout the release. This tape is restricted to a small number of facets and it is up to them to create a dark and somehow ritualistic atmosphere.

Slow in pace, minimal in facets and of a calm sort, Dodhelighaz Grafwlijka Mund Ok Dess Vaggande Avgrundsbruus is something you might want to turn to in hours of exhaustion or relaxation. Sit back, lighten some incense, turn the lights down and let the music fill the air. There is nothing cheerful in the art, but it is also not too depressing either; even though a slight emphasis on this aspect can be discovered.

Something else needs to be mentioned: the compositions lack vocals; I ignore the choral part at the of Gangare sachta fliugha for a moment. No chants, no murmurs ... nothing. In style the concept reminds on October Falls (the non-metal stuff) as well as Of the Wand and the Moon, but again, Semilanceata's art is generally darker and more minimalist, with a different idea behind the compositions and therefore a less orientations on the lyrics. Some of the 'dreamy' facets make an appearance, though. If you know some of the art released by Little Somebody Records - Novemthree or Arrowwood - then you might get an idea of how this Swedish band sounds. Strings of various types are the main focus on this release and they are accompanied by various sounds - flutes for instance or field recordings or drone textures. In each of the composition the listener has to go through a 'unique' set of ideas and motives. Only one aspect remains as constant: the idea behind the music. How it was interpreted changes throughout the entire
album on a large scale. So, the minimalism appears on the micro level, while the macro one reveals a variety of facets.

Dodhelighaz Grafwlijka Mund Ok Dess Vaggande Avgrundsbruus comes surprisingly well produced and has a nice dark touch, which it is able to create over the entire length of the record. As the days turn longer and days of the ice and snow are approaching slowly but steadily, the performance of Semilanceata foreshadows the shift in a nice way. So, in case you were looking for gloomy music for the shorter days of the year, then this output might be something worth to listen to ...

Note: This tape comes with a weird, somehow bubblegum-like odour... well, at least mine has it. Furthermore, a limitation to 47 copies makes it a little bit rare. Both the tape as well as the inlay comes professionally printed. Furthermore, the band is currently planning a somewhat funeral doom inspired piece of art and it is only natural to proceed on this path, because the current music is not far away from this.

TEXT : Swedish band that sounds medieval as hell. Dark dirgey drums and dissonant melodies twanged from strings of a vaguely guitar-like instrument. Atmospheric ambience, sometimes droning, sometimes dynamic. The overall atmosphere is simultaneously unsettling and mesmerizing. Other instruments enter the swirl as the album progresses. De-tuned piano strikes, cellos that have a deep and biting edge, some kind of inter-dimensional harpsichord, clanging on unknown metalic objects, warbled sounds that sometimes sound like vocals, other times sound like a twisted maelstrom of noise exhaled from some unfathomable being. highly, highly recommended.

TEXT : This one might be the most extravagantly packaged of the new batch, but more on that in a second, first the music. A strange detuned psychedelic folk exploration of opium abuse and the descent into addiction from this mysterious Swede, all spidery steel string guitar buzz and muted lumbering percussion, echoey and buzzy and abstract, darkly hypnotic, a sort of late night creep, very dark and ritualistic, haunting and harrowing, the sound seem to be unravelling before your ears, the notes brittle one second, warm and languid the next, the production reverby and lo-fi, occasionally building to a bit of noisy soft chaos, only to return to woozy lumber, it some ways this reminds us of the late great Reeks And The Wrecks, with it's warped blues stumble, but there also seems to be a weirdly blackened buzz, and a depressive futility to the sounds that hints at some doom / black metal influences, maybe more in mood than in sound, but the result is pretty fantastically dark and dreamily depressive.

LIMITED TO 100 COPIES! Housed in a super swank black spray-painted intricately folded cardboard box with metallic gold printing. Inside a printed metallic gold sticker, and a ziplock baggy affixed to the inside of the box, with a gold and black sticker, each bag containing poppy seeds, the tapes printed in gold ink. Each box hand-numbered in gold ink.

INTERVIEW & REVIEW : Semilanceata + cassette reviews
PUBLICATION : A Dead Spot of Light... #11 (Germany | January 19,, 2011 CE)
DOWNLOAD : A Dead Spot of Light... (Archive.org  | PDF)

REVIEW TEXT : Well ... for me this would be the second round of writing on the music of the Swedish band; the first one would have been part of the previous edition of this magazine. As already outlined in the interview, those three releases differ only in small degrees from another, even though (or as?) they have seen the light of day simultaneously. Nevertheless, some discussion of the music will be presented below.

Semilanceata – Kaleidoskopiskt Dualheruus
7 Tracks (CDr – Self-released) -_-_- (44:48)

The outstanding track of this release would be the last one: Sømnad. It has a meditative, calm melody line, which is followed by a neat bass-like tune in the background. Meditative and not monotonous, because there is rather a repetition of the segment and no endless playing of one riff, this way the music rather lures the listener into some sort of sedated state – drugs anyone; and even then Semilanceata did at least so much as to disrupt the flow of the music gently by such offensive samples as those of cowbells. Towards the end even a shift into a strange atmosphere can be experienced. Sounds – howling, crackling –, unnatural tunes, take over and everything seems to take place in a surreal distant world, something that has no bearing in ours. Over thirteen minutes in length and the longest of all compositions by this band up today. Here, the strange nature of art performance can be discovered in some of its facets.  What about the rest, then? The same, but somehow completely different. The guitars are generally the  dominant facet, melodies are often played excessively, nice and charming additional facets appear as well and everything comes with quite a laid back atmosphere. Maybe the last phrase should be emphasized a bit. Brugmansia, the opener, has a slightly childish tune to it, while the succeeding Domning is much darker as well as minimalist. Kaleidoskop on the other hand some interesting and intense percussion parts. Having said this, all basic facets of this release were basically covered.  Another aspect of this recording would be a Black Sabbath cover; Embryo to be precise. In concept as well as sound it is pretty close to the original. An acoustic guitar plays the tunes, but on a slower tempo and accordingly, the entire track is thrice the length. So, this should present the music on this recording in some respect.

Semilanceata – Lifløse som stiærneth hænge i rymdvalf.
6 Tracks (Tape – Self-released) -_-_- (43:30)

Compared with Kaleidoskopiskt Dualheruus the music is slightly different here or to be more precise it offers another set of facets. Moreover, the general set of this recording is a bit darker and even more minimalist then on the other ones. Fælflyktogher um liusløs dagh for instance consists of nothing else but field recordings with only a few sounds and noises – the track is over seven minutes in length –, while Nær sig solen slukna comes with a neat interplay of percussion instruments with the guitar. Aside from this, the band sticks to their way of crafting music. Calm, sedative melodies and rhythms make up most of the art, while aspects like vocals, drums and field recordings appear now and then as well. The sound of rain opens the tape and takes the listener on a strange kind of trip. In case someone associates Sweden and folk music with something cheering, often sarcastic and at times even drastic lyrics, then this band proves something utterly different. Here, this person is able to sit back, let the soft tunes fill the air and enjoy this stark contrast to the all too common hastiness of man.

Sum everything up a bit:
In order to understand the band a bit more, the interview might help a lot to clear matters up. What is the intention behind it, how was the music created and where does the name come from? Readers will find answers to these questions. Maybe a warning should be printed on each of the releases: not appropriate when in cheerful mood. Throughout the entire oeuvre of the Semilanceata several key aspects appear again and again. The calmness, the overall repetitive character of the art, the minimalist attempt, the dark atmosphere, those noises from nature, all those can be found on each of the three outputs by the band. While preparing the interview as well as the reviews, all of them were listened to succinctly, and they flow neatly into each other; maybe even putting the tracks on shuffle would not have made a difference as well. Dark folk/ambient … well crafted and really haunting … and there is nothing more to say about this. Get them...as long as they are available. Remember, only 47 copies!
